Talking from a payphone at the airport in Houston, Bernie j. Piechi, director of U.S. equity research and co-manager of the Federated Capital Appreciation Fund, sounds as enthusiastic in talking about his research team's approach as if they were sitting next to him.
"There are as many different systems or ways to succeed in the investment business as there are investors. The important thing to remember," he says, "is that, whatever system you choose, you have to make sure that you have the best team, the best plan and the best nuances within the plan to ensure that they result in excellent stock selection and great portfolio performance."
Apparently it's working in sync with Federated's view. Since becoming research director in 1999, Picchi hasn't made any major structural changes to the Federated research system.
"A rational philosophy and a structure that highlights that philosophy is what matters in maintaining a healthy firm," he says. "I haven't really built a new house as much as I have furnished it. Wherever there were gaps in knowledge base or organization problems, I filled in with either the best people or the processes that the firm deserved."
And furnish he did. In 2001, Picchi put together a compilation of seasoned and enthusiastic analysts in order to better complement each other and their respective research. With a total of 12 investment analysts and 12 portfolio managers, Picchi directs the U.S. research team to a level of expertise.
