As we all know, the infamous New York Yankees were dethroned right on the verge of winning yet another championship in 2001.
Has any other team in history suffered such an embarrassing ninth inning disaster in the seventh and final game of a World Series?

There have been several similar cases in World Series history, one of which ended in the ninth inning.
In 1960, the Yankees outhit the Pirates, 91-60 and outscored them, 55-27, but lost Game 7 on Bill Mazeroski's ninth inning, leadoff homer against Ralph Terry.
Two other nail-biting, World Series games ended in extra innings.
In 1997, the Indians lost Game 7 to the Marlins in 11 innings after being two outs away from the title in the bottom of the ninth inning before rookie Craig Counsell tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Florida won the game, 3-2, in the 11th inning on Edgar Renteria's single over the outstretched glove of Cleveland pitcher Charles Nagy,
