"I am committed to fixing this irrational payment formula" and the sooner the better, said House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chair Nancy Johnson (R-CT) at a Feb. 28 hearing on the Medicare physician payment formula that's produced a 5.4 percent cut for 2002. In a further apparent sign that the stars are in alignment, doctors' groups including the American Medical Association are urging Congress to adopt the recommendation for revising the payment formula that's put forward by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission in its March report.
