THE 2001 SEASON WAS AMONG THE most memorable of recent decades, with its highlights including a spectacular World Series, Barry Bonds' feat of hitting 73 home runs and the arrival of exceptional rookies of the year in Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki.
The season had its downsides, however, the most poignant being the closing of the playing careers of all-time greats Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken, Jr., and Mark McGwire. Few contemporary players can be so certain of enshrinement in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown as soon as they become eligible for admission.
