I am hoping you will be able to explain something that's mystified me for over 20 years.
As a lifelong Met fan, perhaps I am biased, but I cannot understand why Gil Hodges has not been elected to the Hall of Fame.
He was easily one of the dominating first basemen of his generation, both at bat and on the field. His home run totals rival those of Ralph Kiner, his RBI production was both impressive and consistent, and he sparkled on defense.
His name is as synonymous with the great Brooklyn Dodger teams as those of Duke Snider or Jackie Robinson.
And, his stint as a manager is legendary as he took the Mets from laughing stocks to world champions in less than two years.
So, please tell me why Gil has been continually passed over by both the baseball writers and Veterans Committee.
