Several years ago there was a flurry of questions when someone saw that some Winchester .45 ACP brass had a flash hole much larger than normal. We quickly learned that those cases were from their new non-toxic primers, which contained no lead or other heavy metals such as barium and antimony. A check with Winchester and some independent tests showed that the larger flash hole was not a cause for concern. There was no difference in pressure or velocity when the same load was fired in cases with the large flash hole compared to an older case with the normal hole.

Then, not too long ago, I got a call from a friend who had picked up a bunch of pretty new Federal .45 ACP brass at the range. When he started to load it, however, things came to an abrupt halt when he couldn't seat a primer. It was then that he noticed that the case had a small primer pocket. That's when my phone rang.

Federal's response was the brass must be from their non-toxic BallistiClean line. Yes indeed, the case had the letters "NT" in the headstamp. Federal reported they switched to a small…
