It is hard to think of "incoming" President of the Sierra Nevada Golf Course Superintendent Association, Jim Ferrin, CGCS, as incoming. I say that because it is hard to think of him as ever been "outgoing" from his involvement with this organization. Since his arrival in the Sacramento Valley from San Diego in the early 80s, Jim has been networking and volunteering his time to the ever-increasing membership of the SNGCSA.

Coaching first love

Golf wasn't always Jim's first choice as a career, although taking the game up at age 10, he had hopes of becoming a professional golfer. Other than that, Jim's career path may be considered by some, as proof of Darwin's theory of evolution. As many of you who have met Jim and talked with him at any length, you know he is a passionate guy. He pours himself fully into whatever it is he is involved with. Jim entered the University of California with the idea of getting his teaching credential and coaching basketball or football at the high school level. While working on his Bachelor of Arts Degree at UCLA, he had volunteered to do some coaching in a flag football youth league. His team ended up winning the Los Angeles City Championship for 14-15 year old boys. Coaching was something Jim enjoyed and found fulfilling, but it didn't put food on the table or buy gas.
