Record-setting rains in Southern California have kept lifeguard professionals busy so far this winter, with 21 rescues in San Diego and more than 90 ocean and swift water rescues in the Los Angeles area.
"This was by far the heaviest rain we've had in 10 years," said Lt. Brant Bass, river rescue team leader in San Diego.
In Los Angeles, rainfall was four times more than normal, causing widespread flooding and mudslides. As much as 30 inches fell in parts of Southern California, according to the National Weather Service. Disaster declarations were issued for eight counties in Southern California.
"We had the busiest [period of rescues] in a decade," said Garth Canning, Los Angeles County lifeguard captain.
