Smoking and high salt intake increase the risk of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease, while a high-fiber diet and regular physical exercise decrease it, a study of two large Norwegian surveys suggests.

The study, conducted by Magnus Nilsson, M.D., of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and his associates, included patients aged 20 years or older who participated in a prospective public health survey in 1984-1986 and another cross-sectional public health survey in 1995-1997.
