For most people, the mention of Nevada provokes thoughts of two words: Las Vegas. But the glittering lights of Sin City are a far cry from the awesome off-road opportunities in a place that's a far cry from Vegas, both geographically and culturally.

Elko is located in the mountains of northeast Nevada, roughly midway between Reno and Salt Lake City, Utah, Despite its seemingly remote location, Elko is the fifth-largest city in Nevada. But, most importantly, Elko is an outdoor recreation paradise, with 9 million acres of public land and a fledgling trail system on the verge of being developed.
Cooperation Is Key
On my first night in Elko, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Helen Hankins, BLM field manager for the Elko Field Office say, "These are your public lands to enjoy."
It's that kind of attitude that makes Elko such a great place to ride. The BLM is working closely with the Convention and Visitors Authority to make sure that there are plenty of riding areas. The two groups are working together, along with grants from the State Recreational Trails division of Nevada State Parks to develop the outdoor and motorized recreation that the area offers.
Currently, most of the riding is on established roads, whether they were used for mining or ruts from the early settlers heading west through the mountains. Due to the nearly non-existent...
