Want your guest room to be a soothing, comfortable retreat? Perhaps you should take a few cues from hotels.
Yes, it wasn't long ago that we were fussying-up guest rooms precisely so they wouldn't have the cold, sterile look of hotel rooms of yore. But then hoteliers wised up and realized that most people would be more comfortable surrounded by the feel of the place back home. Rooms from average levels on up now uniformly possess such features as soft colors, thick carpet, ambient lighting, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and coffee maker. Add premium sheets and a plush robe and guests may just decide to stick around for a while.
Which should be exactly the goal of any gracious host planning his or her guest room.
"I've got everything that basically a hotel room would have," said Las Vegas resident Helen Barton, who added that at the same time, her goal is "to make it look homey."
