Upperclass students in high schools nationwide are pioneers -- or guinea pigs -- about to embark on a new college entrance exam.
The made-over SAT, which has revised math and verbal sections and includes an essay, goes into effect in March. The changes alter the gantlet students must go through to enter the majority of colleges and universities.
But the new components of the Scholastic Aptitude Test will be irrelevant to students who want to stay in state.
Nevada's universities won't require the new test. As a result, education officials believe students preparing for college probably will forgo the SAT for the American College Test, which does not require students to write an essay. The ACT is shorter and cheaper.
