When rain beats down on an MX track, things get messy but the racing marches on. When a rainstorm hits the blue-grooved, hard-packed dirt of a flat TT track, racers might as well pack up their quads and take a nap or two. At Round 1 of the 2004 FMF/ATVA TT series, which was also the Cody Hurst Ultimate Challenge, the Saturday that was supposed to be chock full of racing goodness was replaced by a gray and rainy day filled with a lot of naps.

The track at the Wayne County Speedway, in Orrville, Ohio, was prepped and ready for racing Friday. Practices were held on the well-groomed track, which featured option lanes to add to the excitement of fast-pace TT racing. After the first hairpin turn in the track, the lane split around another corner and then merged to a wide kicker jump. After the kicker, the track split again around a turn and then merged together around a hairpin curve that supplied plenty of excitement when racers crossed each others' paths. Practice kicked up a lot of chalky dirt, but the track was prime.
Friday night was host to the first Short Track National race of the season. Darin Ogden took first in the Pro class on his Honda 450R, while Brain Ace, Brandon Watts and Ken Carlin took the checkered flag in their classes.
