Terry Jones: a guy on a mission to ride across the United States on an ATV that's unequivocally street legal. No matter that the Department of Motor Vehicles calls it a motorcycle. Three-wheelers, even reverse three-wheelers like his, are still considered ATVs. And a Yamaha 660R Raptor, the basis for Terry's creation, is certainly an ATV.

"As far as I know," Jones told us before the ride, "no one has ridden an ATV across the USA before and I want to be the first. Ozzy Osbourne's ATV crash was all over the news recently, and I want to do something positive for the sport."

Prior to the cross-country attempt, Jones' longest ride on the Raptor was a four-hour, 230-mile loop. It went without a hitch, but 3,000 miles is a heck of a lot farther. Riding solo, Jones' entire support would consist of a friend driving Jones' Dodge Durango and pulling a small trailer for tools, spare parts and--just in case--the ATV. The day before the ride we talked to Jones, who was surprisingly relaxed about the whole thing. "With preparing the Raptor, getting sponsors, taking time off work and squaring things away with my family, the start of the ride might actually be anti-climactic! I just want to get on the freeway and head on down the road."

A few weeks later, after Jones had ridden into the record books, we talked with him about the history-making journey.
