Beijing, July 31 (PTI) Amid a new low in relations between China and Taiwan, US President George W Bush spoke to his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao and assured Beijing that Washington will "never" support Taipei's bid for independence.

Bush, who telephoned the Chinese leader Friday, expressed his "understanding" of China's concern over the Taiwan issue and said US policy towards Taiwan "remains the same", the state media reported Saturday.
