Wind based projects account for 70 percent of total grid- connected renewable capacity of 13,878.58 megawatt (MW) in India as on 1 Feb 2009.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, plans to install 6,000 MW of wind power by 2012. New projects are being envisaged in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal and Kerala.
About 600 MW of wind power capacity will be installed in 2009-2010 in Maharashtra. Tata Power Company is implementing 123.3 MW of wind power projects in India with Maharashtra accounting for 22.5 MW, Gujarat for 50.4 MW and Karnataka for 50.4 MW.
