URUMQI, China, July 8 (UPI) -- As tensions between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese in China's Urumqi spilled over again, the city's Communist party head vowed severe punishment for rioters.
Calling last Sunday's violence in the capital of the northwest Xinjiang-Uighur region the "deadliest riot since New China was founded in 1949," Urumqi party chief Li Zhi said those responsible would be punished harshly, Xinhua news agency reported. Details of the punishment were not provided.
