A system that automatically detects the standby mode for electrical equipment and disconnects power when it's not required is the winning design in the Live Edge 2008 Challenge. The Intelligent Standby Energy Saver earned a $25,000 cash award, plus services valued at $25,000, for its developer, Pedro Rodrigues.
The Live EDGE--"electronic design for the global environment"--Challenge is presented by Premier Farnell plc, a multi-channel distributor for engineers and purchasing managers.
"This unique power controller design analyzes power consumption using an artificial intelligence algorithm implemented on a high-end micro-controller," Rodrigues explained. As a result the device distinguishes between 'standby' and 'non-standby' modes even when faced with complex consumption patterns. Its sensors detect changes in the environment and "intelligently restore power," as needed.
