Byline: North American Association of Central Cancer Registries
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., July 7 (AScribe Newswire) -- The North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) has presented Dennis Deapen and Jennifer Seiffert with the Calum S. Muir Memorial Award for substantive and outstanding contribution to cancer registration at its annual conference in San Diego, Calif. The award was created to honor Dr. Calum S. Muir, who was a leader in worldwide cancer registration. Dr. Muir was instrumental in founding the International Agency for Cancer Registries, and had a significant impact on the cancer registry field. He was a trailblazer in the effort to develop uniform methods of cancer data collection. The purpose of the Calum Muir Award is to honor those who has made long-term, substantive contributions in cancer registration and who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to NAACCR.
Dennis Deapen, Dr.PH, has served as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Cancer Surveillance Program for over twenty years. He has been an extremely active member of the NAACCR community, serving as President from 2003-2005 and as a member of the Board of Directors from 1998-2006. Dr. Deapen's talents and skills have made him a valuable member of numerous NAACCR committees, including Data Use and Research, Program, Membership, Pathology Lab, Web, Institutional Review Board, Implementation Oversight, Confidentiality Subcommittee, Data Evaluation and Certification, and Research Subcommittee. He co-chaired the Data Use and Confidentiality Task Force, which led to the landmark Data Use and Confidentiality Task Force Report that was released in December 1999.
Dr. Deapen is a classic example of the adage "if you want something done, ask a busy person." He is always willing to help out in any capacity needed. For example, he readily stepped up to the plate to fill a recent Past President vacancy on the Board of Directors. He is a skilled facilitator and thoughtful decision maker, which makes him an invaluable member of any committee. His clear thinking and ability to carefully examine all sides of an issue greatly help members to move beyond disagreements and reach consensus. His expertise in cancer surveillance and epidemiology has been an incredible asset to the NAACCR community.
