Byline: North American Association of Central Cancer Registries
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., July 7 (AScribe Newswire) -- The North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) has presented Amy Kahn and Robin Otto with the Constance L. Percy Award for Distinguished Service. The award is presented annually to a member, or members, who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service to the association. The award was established in honor of Constance Lebair Percy, who was a pioneer of cancer statistics research. Ms. Percy made substantial contributions to public health during her 53-year career as a health statistician. She played an integral role in helping establish the link between smoking and lung cancer, and she was the sole female on the committee for the development of the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) manual. Additionally, Ms. Percy was a founding member of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR).
The 2009 award is presented to Robin Otto, RHIA, CTR and Amy Kahn, MS, CTR. Robin Otto is the manager of the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry. She has been consistent and reliable in her dedication to NAACCR through committee activities over the years. She has been the co-chair of the Registry Operations Committee since 2007 and leader of the Death Clearance Issues Workgroup for the past four years.
Since 2004 Ms. Otto has led a diverse group of registry professionals in a quest to resolve previously unresolved complex issues related to the death clearance process. The goal was to develop one comprehensive death clearance resource for NAACCR members which is now under final review before publication. Not only has she led this group effort, but she has routinely provided information to the Cancer Registry Steering Committee on the issues being addressed so that all standard setting organizations are informed. Ms. Otto has spent many hours dedicated to the tedious consensus building process so critical to success of this work.
