I need to respond to Jeni Peterson's Letter, "Falling into snobbery traps", (Kai Tiaki Nursing New Zealand, May 2009, p3) in order to correct the misunderstanding that has occurred. In stating that the title nurse should be reserved for the graduate of the full three-year degree, I was speaking of the future and specifically in response to the proposed reintroduction of enrolled nurse training. I think that distinction was made reasonably clear from the article in question.

Please Let me state very clearly (and ironically as a hospital-trained nurse myself) that in the past, the title nurse has been quite appropriately based on three-year preparation in hospitals, then in diploma programmes and, since 1995, from degree programmes only.
