The Union Gospel Mission near downtown Spokane, Washington, is an evangelical Christian ministry that provides a variety of services to the homeless, indigent, and people in crisis. You would not be surprised to see, well, homeless and indigent people lining up at the mission for assistance. However, you may be surprised to see cats and dogs lined up waiting for help (with their owners, of course). But that is exactly what you would see on Wednesday mornings.
NBC Nightly News related the story on April 10 of Cathy Tucker, a retired veterinarian who donates her time once a week at the mission to provide free care for pets whose owners cannot afford regular veterinary services. Her ministry began 11 years ago, when a large number of the homeless men arriving at Union Gospel's Men's Mission had pets that needed care. What began as a labor of love to help those men's pets grew over the years, as it became apparent that there were others as well who could not afford medical care for their pets.
