Michael Collins, 45, had the audacity to park in the front driveway of the home he planned to rob. At mid-morning on March 18, he began prying a door open with a crowbar at the back of the house. Apparently Collins thought he had an easy target. He was very wrong.
Inside, off-duty security guard William Cornwall had just returned home from his night job and was sleeping. He heard the sounds of his sliding glass door being forced open. Dazed with sleep, but worried about his three-month-old son and three-year-old daughter at home, he grabbed his pistol and investigated.
Cornwall confronted Collins in a hallway of his Lake Wales, Florida, home. Collins instantly confirmed his violent intent, and the homeowner's worst fears, when he attacked with the crowbar rather than flee.
According to the March 18 Tampa Bay Online, Lake Wales Assistant Police Chief Christopher Velasquez said that the investigation showed that Cornwall fired seven rounds during the incident.
He fired two shots inside the home as Collins attacked, hitting Collins in the arm and head. This was sufficient to cause Collins to retreat. As Collins rounded the house in an attempt to escape, Cornwall ran through the house to his front door. ...
