On March 26, the Jacksonville, Florida, Sheriff's Department presented a Certificate of Appreciation to 14-year-old Jamar Williams for his heroic action in saving the life of an elderly woman.
On December 6, 2008, Jamar and his mother, a school-bus driver, were in a bus transporting a group of senior citizens home from a Christmas party, when an 83-year-old woman lost control of her car. According to firstcoastnews.com, Blanca Toda was trying to stop after backing up, but accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. The gas pedal stuck, and her car crossed a concrete barrier, plunged through a parking lot, hit a tree, and flipped over. She was trapped in the overturned vehicle, which was leaking gasoline.
