Balancing act
A new equality law will place pressure on industry employment practices, obliging firms with government work to introduce and fulfil equality policies.
The Equality Bill promises to
Bring all existing equality legislation, some dating back to the early 1970s, under one roof. Laws on equal pay, age, sex, race and disability discrimination will be covered by this bill. This makes equality issues easier to understand and will make it simpler for individuals to bring a discrimination claim.
Use public procurement to improve equality. Companies will find it easier to win public sector contracts if they can show they employ a diverse workforce.
Introduce gender pay reports. All private sector firms employing more than 250 people may have to produce equal pay reports after 2013.
