After two months of decline, prices for finished goods swung back into positive territory in April, rising 0.6%, according to the latest producer price index (PPI) report of seasonally unadjusted prices. According to figures supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, despite the small rise, finished goods prices still stand 3.7% below April 2008 levels.
As is often the case, results from the five PPI categories tracked by HMM were mixed. Most striking is the continual price roller coaster in the petrochemical manufacturing category.
In March, petrochemicals, a key ingredient in a variety of medical supplies, rose 11.4%. Then in April, petrochemicals slipped 3.7%. Still, prices in this important category are a full 45.6% below April 2008 levels.
Medical care commodities rise slightly
Over in the unadjusted consumer price index (U.S. city average), medical care commodities rose 0.4% for the month, leaving that index 2.4% higher for the past 12 months.
