Prices for a small market basket of four basic medication categories surged in the first quarter of 2009, jumping by 3.52% according to new figures from IMS Health in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
Psychotherapeutics and cardiovasculars, which increased 6.41% and 5.68% respectively, led the uncharacteristically steep rise.
The 3.52% price rise for the overall index contrasts with a 1.99% rise in 4Q08 prices and declining prices in each of the two previous quarters.
The remaining two segments registered more modest changes. Noncephalosporins rose 2.48% after increasing 3.31% the previous quarter, while cephalosporins and related drugs slipped 0.82%.
