The way Dr. Jennifer Sudarsky sees it, one of the biggest challenges to being a physician is the quest to get home on time, whatever "on time" means for you.
"It's all such a struggle," said the 40-year-old family physician who holds two jobs--one as an urgent care physician at a busy HMO in Southern California, the other as medical director of a new alternative medicine practice in Venice, Calif.
Challenged by the effort to pick up her daughter at day care on time, arrange babysitter coverage, keep track of her husband's professional sailing schedule, and carve out rime for family events, last year Dr. Sudarsky made a New Year's resolution to reduce that stress.
Her solution? A family calendar displayed on the home refrigerator.
Every Sunday night, Dr. Sudarsky transfers important events and notes from her own calendar and her husband's calendar onto the family calendar.
"It notes things like days the Sparkletts water guy comes, days the garbage gets picked up, days my husband picks up our daughter from day care, and days I might have a medical conference to attend," she said, adding that online calendars and those round in personal digital assistants are helpful...
