SAN FRANCISCO -- People with HIV are less likely to die of AIDS since the introduction of better AIDS medications in 1996, which means they are more likely to die of other causes.
Three studies backed this truism with results presented in posters at the 11th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
Among 79,979 people who were diagnosed with AIDS in New York and San Francisco and who died between 1987 and 1999, 88% died because of HIV infection and 12% died of other underlying causes, most commonly of heart disease (2%)....
