NEW ORLEANS -- While zygomycosis is not a common fungal infection, it is particularly dangerous for patients with diabetes or compromised immune systems, according to Dr. Richard E. Winn, who spoke at a meeting on fungal infections sponsored by Imedex.
Zygomycosis is thought to be the fourth most common mycosis among immunocompromised individuals. Several risk factors increase vulnerability to the infection, including acidemia (particularly that resulting from diabetes), uremia, organ transplantation, neutropenia, monocyte abnormalities, and deferox amine therapy.
