B ritain is "sleepwalking" into a pensions crisis if a radical solution is not found to counter the demise of company schemes, an industry expert has predicted.

Marcus Hurd, of Aon Consulting, said new evidence that more firms were preparing to axe final salary pensions added to continuing fears over low levels of individual savings and the "meagre" size of the state pension.

He said in a speech to the Pensions Research Accountants Group that the Government must find ways to encourage rather than discourage pension provision.
