A new generation of stylish airport spas and dial-in hotel beauty services is putting the fun (and function) back in your travel plans.
airport overhauls
Nothing about BUTTER LONDON' s stylish new nail salonnow open at Seattle-Tacoma International Airportrecalls the standard airport ambience. There's the de Gournayinspired custom wallpaper, the black crystal chandelier, and the 50 nontoxic polish shades created by editorial manicurist/company creative director Nonie Creme (she used Yummy Mummy and British Racing Green backstage at Alexander Wang's and Vena Cava's fall shows, respectively). XPRESSPA with nearly 30 U.S. locations, from LaGuardia to San Francisco Internationalhas swift service down to a science. Flash facials take only 20 minutes; the OPI pedicures come with plane-friendly slippers, so no smudges; and perhaps their most ingenious airport innovation: last-minute waxing, for those en route to the beach. KORRES' s eco-beauty boutiques at Athens International are ideal spots to pop in to for a post-flight touch-up from one of the on-site makeup artists; for those with serious time to kill, LA PRAIRIE offers the Extended Stay (a three-and-a-half-hour beauty extravaganza including a facial, massage, manicure, and pedicure) at their full-service spa at Buenos Aires's Ezeiza International.
Bespoke beauty has infiltrated the best first- and business-class lounges, too: Courtesy of Air France, CLARINS provides Japanese-inspired massages, gratis, at Paris Charles de Gaulle; Qantas's MARC NEWSONDESIGNED DAY SPA at Sydney International takes the edge off layovers with its luxe marble shower suites and nerve-calming 30-meter vertical garden. British Airways has installed ELEMIS TRAVEL SPA s at JFK and London Heathrow (the main attraction: heated, acupressure-administering Intelligent Massage Chairs); also at Heathrow, the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse has everything from a COWSHED spa to a BUMBLE AND BUMBLE salon. The only question: What will your blowout look like after an eight-hour flight?
