FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. -- The Medicare prescription drug law provides incentives to physicians to encourage the use of electronic prescribing.
The new law calls on the federal government to conduct demonstration projects and offer direct grant funding to physicians to encourage the use of electronic prescribing, Mark A. Lieberman, J.D., counsel at Shaw Pittman's health law practice, said at a meeting sponsored by the Medical Records Institute.
The law also directed the Department of Health and Human Services to create exceptions and safe harbors in the antifraud and antikickback laws to allow hospitals to help physicians adopt e-prescribing by providing software or hardware.
