Kudos to Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs. His guest editorial "Third World Disease" (May 1, 2004, p. 6) should be reprinted every so often.
We who thrive in the industrial world, especially here in the United States, must be constantly reminded of our part in inflicting on the rest of the world the reasons for their being mired in the throes of ill health, starvation, and illiteracy. They all go together. Dr. Sachs harshly but correctly admonished us for our part in such horrors as unnecessary, hegemonic, and soluble, Amen.
But I suggest he shortchanged us on that part of the equation. It deserves reinforcement. While he pointed out that the costs of managing the world's correctable illnesses are partly reflected in our squandered finances on "military operations in Iraq," more must be made of that point because of its seminal role and enormous ...
