"Baby mamma" is the term African American men use for the mothers of their babies. Against all odds, some of these single mothers are pursuing college degrees, hoping to break out of the cycle of poverty for the sake of their children.
There are more of them on campus than you might guess. Stung by stigma, many don't mention their motherhood around people who might not get it. That compounds their isolation on campus. Add single-parent struggles of time and money, and it's a tribute to their motivation and grit that some persist to complete a degree.
