The proportion of instructors working off the tenure track has grown dramatically, according to a new report from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
The report, "The State of the Higher Education Workforce 1997-2007," shows the percentage of staff members, including grad students, not on the tenure track grew from 67% in 1997 to 73% in 2007. The increase in part-time and non-tenured instructors was found across higher ed, with the most dramatic increase at community colleges, 79% in 1997 to 82% in 2007.
