Jennifer Linn's Tales of Mystery is part of the Composer Showcase series in the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library. This contemporary suite of six intermediate compositions presents a variety of characters, textures and styles that evoke mysterious and diverse soundscapes. Each piece is kinesthetically appealing to play and musically interesting. Pedagogically, these compositions offer a wealth of pianistic elements for the intermediate pianist, encompassing voicing and balance, harmonic coloring, pedaling, syncopated rhythms, arpeggiated accompaniments, rubato and stylistic contrasts.
The collection opens with "Escape into the Night," a prelude consisting of hand-over-hand arpeggios that sweep up and down the keyboard in D minor, interlaced with colorings of diminished chords and the augmented second of the minor scale. "Message in a Bottle" is a lyrical waltz with a melody of rising sixths and elegant descending scalar passages.
