This lovely collection includes 24 traditional Chinese folk songs arranged for intermediate piano solo. The melodies were selected from those popular to mainland China and represent modern China, the Han representing the largest ethnic majority. The edition is beautifully illustrated with scenes from Chinese life plus a map of China. Each title is printed in English as well as character Chinese. I particularly appreciated the articulate notes on each piece written by Johnson.
The arrangements are quite interesting and unique with well-conceived and varied harmonic structure. The subjects range from nature to everyday life with simple but beautiful melodies. The pieces progress from a simple one-page piece to more elaborate works at the back of the book. The ...
