Like most members of MTNA, I'm in the piano world--teaching and performing. MTNA has an interesting dual role; it is the only national organization for piano teachers, but at the same time it is the only umbrella association for teachers of ALL instruments. Occasionally I hear from those in the "non-piano" sector that they can feel (understandably) just a bit marginalized.
So this column will be about--singing. Like quite a few pianists I know, I'm crazy about singers. Pianists emulate the singing voice when shaping a melody, we love to accompany good singers, and we erupt, alarmingly at times, in our own impassioned version of "singing" while teaching a lyrical Chopin Nocturne.
Therefore, I'd like to congratulate and thank MTNA for featuring, in a high-profile way, recitals by notable singers in our recent conferences. This year in Atlanta we were treated to the art of tenor Anthony Dean Griffey.
