AMERICAN ICON
Many thanks for the March 2009 cover. Having a strong, educated black woman wearing a young, Taiwan-born American designer's dress celebrates what I have always believed about America: that it is a country of opportunity, hope, and new ideas, no matter what your race.

AndrA[c] Leon Talley does an excellent job of turning Michelle Obama, superwoman, into Michelle Obama, everyday woman ["Leading Lady," photographed by Annie Leibovitz, March]. She concerns herself with family matters, such as finding a church and being involved in her daughters' school. Yet she is simultaneously able to tackle national issues like diversity through the simple idea of inviting everyone into her home. Michelle has dealt gracefully with her new role as an icon. She is not afraid of being herself and dressing in a manner that makes her feel beautiful, yet comfortable. I related to her struggle to balance work and life. The new First Lady is a true role model to women everywhere. I am excited to see what the next four years will bring, both for her family and for the entire country.
