August 3, 2008 was my birthday--also the birthday of the New Face of Certification. On this date the beginnings of the new Certification program were presented to the members of the National Certification Commission in Norman, Oklahoma. The new certification process that resulted from this meeting of the Commissioners fulfills MTNA's goal that the Certification requirements fit our need to simplify, refine and streamline.
Why the changes? Recommendations from NCTMs for less paper work in the Certification process and a greater focus on teaching has spurred these changes. This streamlined, more user-friendly process will take less time to complete, while still maintaining the high standards of Certification. It helps teachers to focus on and improve their music teaching skills. It is the aim of all those participating in crafting this new process that more music teachers will have greater visibility and respect in their communities as professionally qualified teachers of music by becoming Nationally Certified through MTNA.
What Is Pedagogy--Really?
In Webster's Dictionary, Pedagogy is defined as "the function or work of a teacher; teaching; the art or science of teaching; education; instructional methods. To Teach." Just what you and I are all about--dealing with people, helping youngsters, teens and adults learn and understand the skills of music making in order to share and enjoy together the beautiful music we love.
What Is The New Face of Certification?
* It is certifying as a teacher.
* It is creating your profile of teaching philosophy, concepts and skills.
