Some trainers make it sound like anyone with a calculator can lose weight: Burn more calories than you take in and you're all set. But Deidre Sully, Kathleen McNary, and Heather Allison know that it takes motivation and stamina, too. Sully alternates among weight training, squats, and sprints with trainer Todd Sweet of Equinox Fitness Clubs. After McNary trains with Chris Uy at Sports Club/LA, she takes a boot camp class. And running and biking supplement Allison's time with trainer Nicole Molinari of Peak Performance.
PROGRESS REPORT
Deidre Sully, research assistant
FITNESS HISTORY: "In high school, I got exercise from gym class, marching band, and walking to and from schoolit wasn't much. I gained weight in college, so I started working out during my senior year. By the end of grad school, I slowly stopped goingI just didn't have time."
EXERCISE RX: "Before, I did only cardioI had no idea how to lift weights. Now, I mostly strength-train with Todd Sweet at Equinox three days a week, and twice more I do the elliptical and StairMaster on my own. The best part is that I can walk into the gym and use the weight machines by myself with confidence."
THIRTY-DAY UPDATE: "My trainer realizes when I'm being dramatic. If I say, 'I need to rest,' his response is, 'You don't need to rest; you want to rest.' Every time I put on a pair of pants that are too big, I feel victorious. My back and stomach are taking their time, but my legs, arms, and even my breasts have gotten much smaller. And I have a lot more endurance when I'm running to make my train in the morning!"
