SEOUL, June 8 Asia Pulse - Ssangyong Motors Corp. (KSE:003620), South Korea's smallest carmaker, urged its striking workers on Monday to stop their weeks-long sit-in protest saying that it could reconsider a massive lay-off.
Thousands of unionized workers at Ssangyong have occupied the carmaker's sole plant in the city of Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, since May 21, to protest a massive job-cut plant. In response, Ssangyong has closed the Pyeongtaek factory.
"Should striking workers stop their sit-in protest, and return to work, we can reconsider a massive job-cut plan," said an official at the carmaker.
Ssangyong, which has been under court receivership since February, plans to cut 36 per cent of its workforce, or 2,646 workers, as part of its survival bid.
