HANOI, June 8 Asia Pulse - By 2010 every enterprise in Vietnam that applies for a production license should be compelled to invest in environment-friendly operations.
It is a major condition required by the ministry of planning and investment in its joint plan with the UN Development Programme for environmental sustainability.
The move calls for applicants to include investments in green production lines and standardised waste treatment facilities.
At least half of all newly-licensed establishments should be certified as meeting environmental standards or ISO 14001.
Up to 40 per cent of urban areas and 70 per cent of industrial and export-processing zones will have to invest in waste-treatment systems that meet environmental standards capable of collecting between 80 and 90 per cent of domestic and industrial waste daily, and treat over 60 per cent of toxic waste and 100 per cent of hospital waste.
The ministry also pledged to shut down 75 per cent of serious environmental polluters.
