HANOI, June 8 Asia Pulse - Vietnamese exports of cashews dropped 16.1 per cent to US$251 million in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year.
However, export volume was down just 1 per cent to 57,000 tonnes, according to the General Statistics Office.
The Vietnam Cashews Association said the decline was mainly due to the global economic crisis that had hit consumption in the US, the largest importer of Vietnamese cashews, and Europe.
The export price of cashews fell to US$5,400-5,500 per tonne compared with last year's average export price of US$6,500-7,000 per tonne, the association said.
However, Nguyen Duc Thanh, deputy chairman of the association, said he is optimistic trade would pick up.
