BRISBANE, June 8 Asia Pulse - Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean left for Bali on Saturday to preside over the 33rd ministerial conference of the Cairns Group (CG) to discuss world trade and ways to combat protectionism.
The meeting, which was to be attended by ministers of 19 farm produce exporting countries including Indonesia`s Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, was to be held from June 7 through 9.
Simon Crean said Friday it would be very timely to hold the Bali meeting, in view of declining world trade, as the result of the global economic crisis.
"The Bali meeting is expected to send a strong political message on the importance of combating protectionism and finalizing the World Trade Oganization (WTO) negotiations," he said. ...
