Glucosamine sulfate appears to have disease-modifying activity in postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis, Dr. Carmelo Gonzalez-Rodriguez said at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society.
Dr. Gonzalez-Rodriguez works for Rotta Research Laboratorium in Monza, Italy, which makes the prescription formulation of a glucosamine agent used widely in Europe. He and other investigators based their conclusions on a retrospective analysis of data from two randomized, placebo-controlled trials of glucosamine.
Of the 414 participants in the trials, which were conducted at the University of Liege (Belgium), 319 were postmenopausal women.
