Products marketed for enhancing athletic performance are attracting fans among athletes at all levels of ability, from casual health club members to elite athletes, Dr. Harrison Pope Jr. said at a conference on sports nutrition supplements sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Hot products in this largely unregulated market include creatine (touted as a muscle strength enhancer), ephedrine (said to increase endurance, especially when combined with caffeine) and "andro" agents (precursors of anabolic steroids that boost testosterone levels and help increase muscle mass).
