The number of Americans eligible for lipid-lowering drug therapy under the latest National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines is nearly 2.5-fold greater than under earlier versions, Gilbert J. L'Italien, Ph.D., said at the annual scientific sessions of the American Heart Association.
An estimated 36 million Americans are eligible for drug therapy under NCEP III guidelines released last year, compared with 15 million under NCEP II, said Dr. L'Italien of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Wallingford, Conn.
