NEW ORLEANS -- Another cervico-vaginal marker to help predict spontaneous preterm birth has been identified, Dr. Patrick S. Ramsey reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Elevated vaginal prolactin levels detected at 22-24 weeks' gestation were predictive of preterm birth in a nested case-control study including 183 women who delivered before 37 weeks, said Dr. Ramsey of the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Prolactin, a polypeptide protein produced by the pituitary gland and the deciduas, regulates fluid and electrolyte flux across fetal membranes and may serve as an immunomodulatory protein, Dr. Ramsey explained in a poster session at the meeting, which was cosponsored by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
